How to build a Greenhouse in your own garden
Let us assume, for the sake of argument, that you have chosen which greenhouse you wish to erect, you know where you're going to build it, and that you have obtained the necessary planning permission. What now? You should by now have detailed plans of the building drawn up, and along with these a List of Materials. The first thing to do is to clear the building site and enough area around it to enable you to be able to move around with a wheelbarrow and the various tools you are going to use. Have all the materials from the Material List purchased and delivered to site - check these against a master list to ensure that everything is there and make sure they are placed in a convenient spot where you can easily lay your hands on them.
Once the site has been cleared, stake out the area that has to carry the foundations and start digging. If you are going to have to throw a concrete slab, then be ready to pour concrete onto the slab at the same time as pouring the foundations - this will save time and money, especially if an outside contractor is going to supply ready mixed concrete for you. Depending on the type of framework of the greenhouse and whether it is going to have side walls, it may not be necessary to have deep foundations but just a slab, though the latter should be thick enough to support the planned structure.
Once the concrete has thoroughly set, commence on the side walls and/or framework - make sure that any framework is bolted well to its foundation. Remember to allow for the introduction of various utilities, i.e. water pipes, electricity cables and points, and drainage. With the frame finished and solid, finish off the utilities and put in all the glass or whatever other medium you are using. Finish off by installing the doors and vents. At this stage you should finish off the floor and if there are any inside beds, commence construction thereof.
It is now time to carry on with the interior of the greenhouse. Construct shelves and benches connect all the utilities, including ventilation fans and a heating system. The time has now come to paint, stain and varnish the various surfaces. Voila! One greenhouse. Once the greenhouse is finished, make sure that you allocate a certain minimum amount of time each week to work in it, and stick to your schedule.
